Deputy Chief Sub Editor

Position Summary

To supervise the day-to-day work of the sub-editing team in its liaison with various desk heads and magazine editors. The deputy chief sub-editor will be expected to facilitate a smooth and structured flow of news copy to online and ensure that various hardcopy deadlines are met. 

General Duties and Responsibilities:

• Line management of a group of sub-editors in line with their goals and the competencies that shape them. 
• Liaison with editors/desk heads on a daily basis in relation to the delivery of copy. 
Liaison with other departments (production, online, scanning) as appropriate. 
• Delegating work to the sub-editors in order to best maximise its flow through the subbing section. 
• Maintaining high standards in relation to headlines, standfirsts, rewriting, general subbing and legal issues. 
• Keeping the chief sub-editor updated on a daily basis as to developing issues and workflows. 
• Guiding new sub-editors and temporary workers when they join the team. 
• Assisting the chief sub-editor to ensure that entity extraction is completed to the highest possible standard. 
• Assisting the chief sub with the organisation and implementation of regular team meetings. 
• Ensuring that regular feedback is sought and offered to internal customers such as magazine editors. 
• Assisting the chief sub with ensuring that traffic to janes.com increases.

Key Tasks:

Ensuring that Jane's products are subbed to the highest possible standard and in a timely manner; working with the Chief Sub-Editor to update janes.com; working with the Chief Sub-Editor to develop and enforce Jane's House Style; incorporate new technologies smoothly into existing workflows

Skills / Knowledge / Experience

It is essential that you are able to demonstrate and apply:

• NCTJ or equivalent journalistic qualification. 
• Two years or more sub-editing experience (news and features). 
• Experience of management in a similar position an advantage. 
• Knowledge of defence/transport an advantage.
