Female business professionals celebrated 30 years of City Women's Network at an event held at Merrill Lynch in the City of London last night.
According to guest speaker Angela Knight, chief executive of the British Bankers' Association, working women could help plug the current skills gap in the UK, after yesterday's announcement by the Chartered Insurance Institute that the skills shortage in the financial services sector is worsening.
"There is real potential for women to be successful in business nowadays and the role and influence of women in the City has increased in the past 30 years since City Women's Network started," she said.
However, president of City Women's Network Clare Dobie noted that discrimination against female workers "still exists".
Ms Dobie said that discrimination against females is now "subtler" than it used to be but is particularly prevalent over "the issue of the pay gap".
