Manufacturing industry group the EEF has called for the government to support greater onsite medical treatment to help employees return to work quicker.
Criticising the NHS for failing to provide adequate healthcare for people of working age, Dr Sayeed Khan, chief medical adviser at the organisation, said that more resources were needed to enable workers to access treatment sooner, Personnel Today reports.
"The most common complaints are stress and back pain. It would be fantastic to have physiotherapy centres nearer workplaces, such as on business parks for example," he remarked.
In March, work and pensions secretary John Hutton announced that the Department for Work and Pensions would be undertaking a review of the health of the UK's working age population.
Mr Hutton stated that 30 million working days are lost each year because of occupational ill health and injury – a trend which has a negative impact upon the productivity of the country's workforce.
