A large proportion of European employees see weekends as "sacred", according to new research.
When questioned "how often do you work at the weekend?" in a poll by Monster.co.uk, 39 per cent of the 7,268 respondents answered "never! My weekend is sacred".
A further 20 per cent said that they had to give up their weekends to work " a few times a year" while nine per cent said they did so "once a month" while 12 per cent have to work "every weekend (outside normal working hours)".
The poll showed that for the most part, the French, Belgium, UK and Irish workforces view weekends as particularly sacrosanct.
However, 20 per cent said they have a job which means they "have to work at weekends", with the highest number of respondents coming from the UK (26 per cent) followed by Ireland and Austria.
The country with the lowest percentage was France, with just 15 per cent of participants in the poll claiming that their current job incurs weekend working hours.
