Retailer Majestic Wine has announced a 17 per cent rise in profits to £6.5 million for the 26 weeks ending September 26th 2006.
The UK-based firm says that sales during the period were up 6.2 per cent to £88.3 million, with orders made on its website almost doubling.
Online transactions now account for six per cent of Majestic Wine's sales.
The company, which now has 133 stores across Britain, today said that the average amount of money that a customer spends in a single purchase is £121, while the average bottle of wine is up to £5.66
But Majestic also revealed that its fine wine sales, those valued above £20, are up 33 per cent.
Tim How, chief executive of the firm, said: "I am very pleased with our first half performance and the rate of new store openings. Like for like sales for the five weeks from September 26th to October 30th were up 4.3 per cent."
Chairman Simon Burke added: "We saw strong sales growth in wines from the Loire, Spain, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina. Champagne and rose wine sales were also strong."
