Some employees may not be taking time off work when they are unwell because they are afraid of what their co-workers will think of them, one company has claimed.
Sambucol says that in Britain professionals often "point fingers" at those who do not come into the office.
However, it claims that people should take the responsibility of deciding whether they really are well enough to come to work or whether they risk passing on an illness to other colleagues.
Dr Serene Foster, an immunologist and registered medical herbalist speaking on behalf of Sambucol, said: "It is the start of the cold and flu season and it's important to maintain a healthy immune system."
According to a survey published by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, flu, colds and stomach upsets were the most common reasons for short-term absence.
However, in the public sector stress was the reason most people took time off.
