Having a second language under your belt may be "very important" when looking for a job, an advisor has claimed.
Knowledge of a foreign language could boost a CV and be "useful" despite major European countries increasingly negotiating in English, said The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
While those working for UK-based businesses will not necessarily need a second language, those who work for international companies may find it a "bonus", especially if facing the prospect of international transfer.
CIPD advisor Angela Baron commented: "If you're going to go and work in a global organisation then clearly language skills are going to be quite useful […] think carefully about where you want to work and what languages will therefore be important."
According to 2001 figures from the National Institute of Adult Education, 29 per cent of UK adults speak a second language, while 11 per cent speak two or more.
