An industry expert has spoken out about managers who are using the recession as an excuse to make staff redundant irresponsibly.
According to Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, businesses which lay off workers as an easy way to cut costs are jeopardising their long-term prospects.
He claims they could be losing employees with valuable skills as well as running the risk of being taken to court if they dodge redundancy payments.
Mr Barber said: "Where compulsory job losses are inevitable, unions will work to ensure that they are fair, transparent and free from discrimination.
"Any firm that fails to do this could find itself in court facing unfair dismissal claims," he added.
In related news, Recruiter recently reported on a study conducted by fish4jobs which found that many people would take a pay cut if it meant they could save their colleagues from redundancy.
