Employment practices by media companies in London are making it a difficult industry to get into for people of certain backgrounds, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has found.
A report released by the TUC has examined the state of the audio visual industry in the capital and has found training, employment and recruitment practices are accounting for the lack of staff from poor backgrounds or from an ethnic minority on the sector.
In London the average ratio of ethnic minority workers in an industry is just over a third, yet in the audio visual sector ethnic minority workers account for just eight per cent of staff.
Chief executive of Skillset Dinah Caine commented that bosses should help create channels into the industry for people from all backgrounds.
"More needs to be done by training providers and employers to create effective pathways into the industry for all London communities," she said.
The TUC will be holding its Equality at Work conference in Manchester on October 27th.
