Travel industry employees 'need transferable skills'

Travel companies should invest time in training their staff so they have transferrable skills to help them during the recession, it has been suggested.
The Institute of Travel and Tourism claims that as there is a lull in bookings, firms within the industry will have to consider other ways of generating profit.
By cross-training employees instead of making hasty redundancies, the institute believes that a situation similar to that in the 90s when companies made staff cuts and then had no workers when business picked up can be avoided.
Claire Steiner, director and chair of education and training at the Institute of Travel and Tourism, said: "They need to recognise that and keep staff in. That will create a real sense of loyalty and gives them the opportunity to, while bookings are quiet, train and upskill their staff."
In related news, Deloitte's Entrepreneurship UK: 2008 report revealed that for 31 per cent of businesses, the main barrier to growth is lack of quality people.
