Toyota overtakes GM
Japanese automaker Toyota says it sold more cars than industry leader General Motors (GM) in the first quarter of 2007.

Toyota revealed today that between January and March it sold 2.35 million units across the world, a rise of nine per cent.

But Detroit-based GM said it sold 2.26 million cars during the same period.

GM has been regarded as the world's largest carmaker for three-quarters of its 99-year history, but faltering US sales have seen Toyota inch towards its rival in recent years.

Nevertheless, GM still enjoys significant success in China, a market with huge potential.

Toyota, which owns the Lexus brand among others, currently manufactures America's most popular car – the Camry sedan.

GM meanwhile owns Chevrolet, Buick and Saab auto lines.
