Toyota beats Ford for first time


Toyota Motor yesterday reported all-time best-ever July sales, outstripping Ford for the first time.

The Japan-based firm outsold Ford in July to rank as the second biggest automaker in the US, according to David Lucas, vice president of Autodata.

Sales at Ford dropped 35.2 per cent last month to 241,339.

At General Motors the figure was 19.5 per cent, with 406,298 vehicles sold.

Toyota sold 241,826 vehicles in the US, an increase of 12 per cent compared to last year, 427 more than Ford.

Asia's largest automaker sold 1,465,368 vehicles to date this year, an increase of 10.8 per cent over the same period last year.

The Japan-based firm said hybrid sales exceeded the 100,000-unit sales milestone for the year, with sales in July standing at 20,298 units.
