Supermarket giant Tesco is reflecting on further record sales after enjoying its best ever Christmas trading period.

Releasing a trading update for the six weeks ending January 6th, Tesco says that like-for-like sales excluding petrol were up 5.9 per cent at its UK stores.

Including petrol, sales rose 8.3 per cent in Britain, while sales increased 9.9 per cent in the six-week period alone.

There were many individual success stories at the group, with sales in its organic food range up 39 per cent, while fine meat and poultry sales increased by 55 per cent.

"The entire Tesco team worked hard to deliver an even better Christmas for customers than last year, including a record year in many non-food categories, including toys and games, electronics and clothing," a company statement today said.

Tesco's online and delivery divisions took two million orders in its busiest Christmas ever, with internet sales increasing by a third to £150 million.

Although many retailers have already revealed that high street spending floundered during the festive period, supermarkets such as Sainsbury's and Morrisons have reported record Christmas sales; although Tesco's success has outstripped them both.
