Teenagers have no idea about the world of technology and engineering, a new report suggests.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has revealed that 90 per cent of 14 to 15-year-olds are clueless about the engineering industry and it does not feature in the top ten career choices for young people.
Head of education of 5 to 19-year-olds at the IET Jan Stapleton commented that the sector is essential to the economy.
"Engineering brings wealth creation to the economy and it is imperative that the UK attracts more young people into engineering and technology to tackle the growing skills shortage," she said.
She added that there is "no magic solution" to the problem.
The study found that youngsters of that age would most like to become a lawyer, a teacher or a professional sports star.
A report conducted by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) and released last month showed a skills shortage in the consultancy and engineering sector.
