Survey reveals over-50s are first to go
A new survey has shown that those over the age of 50 are more likely to be made redundant than their younger colleagues.

Research conducted by ICM and commissioned by Age Concern found that the number of over-50s losing their jobs during the recession is up by a quarter.

This is three times more than the increase for younger colleagues, the Telegraph reports.

Nine out of ten respondents felt it was harder for older unemployed people to find a new job.

Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, said: "Older workers are facing a double whammy of faster rises in unemployment levels than other age groups and forced retirement."

Dumping older workers is short-sighted, asserts a spokesperson for ClickAJob - so is glossing over them as new hires.

"Most over-50s have a stronger work ethic," he explains.

"They're so committed to the job, with such a deep sense of responsibility, that some canny employers actually prefer them."

"Add their training and experience and they're a sharply competitive asset," he adds.

"And if you think of older workers as short-term because they're approaching retirement, just remember that younger people tend to change their jobs every three years anyway," he continues.

"That makes it a trade-off - enthusiastic and resilient versus knowing and dependable - and in these tough times, your over-50s could often be a better bet."

In related news, Nick Flint, chief executive of Club Vita, recently claimed that many employers are now changing their attitudes towards the compulsory retirement age.

He believes this is a good thing as working can help keep people mentally active and alert for longer.
