The Metropolitan Police Service is planning to train recruits with the help of supermarket staff and customers.
As part of the new national Initial Police Learning and Development Programme, the Met is required to find eight new training centres and has decided that two of these will be based at major retailers in North London.
Recruits will undergo training in the stores for up to six months at a time and both supermarket employees and shoppers will take part in role-playing exercises, personneltoday.com reports.
Met programme manager Ben Bennett commented: "We were constrained by the number of Met buildings and we can't have police officers training in every police station.
"These supermarkets said they had some space and the benefit is we are training in the community.
"Anything we can do to open up and be transparent in our training will enhance the commun¬ity's view of the police."
All new recruits will now be based at the training centre in Hendon for just one week before moving to a new location for a further 25 weeks.
