Staff think employers 'cut health and safety corners'
19-02-2009
New research has revealed that six out of ten employees think their boss is paying less attention to health and safety because of the recession.
Only 38 per cent believe that their employer is as committed to health and safety as they have always been, the National Accident Helpline survey discovered.
John Campbell, legal director at the National Accident Helpline, explained that in the long-run, employers will not be saving any money by cutting costs when it comes to staff welfare.
He said: "Cutting corners on health and safety is a false economy as there will be costs to the business through lost man hours and sick pay."
This comes as the Health and Safety Executive has just reported that 34 million days are lost every year due to injury or illness caused by work.
Last month, the Health and Safety Offences Act 2008 was implemented which means there could now be tougher punishments for employers who break health and safety regulations.
