Workers are keeping their careers goals a secret from their managers, it has emerged.
Research by BlessingWhite has found that 52 per cent of employees do not fully discuss their career plans with their managers.
Furthermore, more women than men will be open about their plans for the future and older workers are more likely to discuss career intentions than younger members of staff.
UK managing director of BlessingWhite Tom Barry commented that leaders should speak to their staff about their career goals on a regular basis.
"Managers need a framework for structured, open communication with employees about their careers - something more than the annual reprisal," he remarked.
Getting to grips with the issue is important to help employees remain engaged and delivering good results, he said.
He added that employees of any age should take a more active role in achieving their career goals.
A recent study by the American Journal of Public Health found that staff who fail to receive support from their managers can be more prone to suffer from stress.
