Social networking 'shouldn't be blocked' from employees

Social networking sites should not be banned from the office, according to one company.
The business potential of web 2.0 applications could be lost if employees cannot access such sites, US firm Gartner has suggested.
Vice president of Gartner Joseph Feiman stated that the creativity of web 2.0 applications can "unlock huge business value", although there are some technical risks involved.
If firms evaluate the potential risks of such sites they can "determine the most effective constraints and controls" for the applications, Mr Feiman said.
Online Recruitment reports David Lavenda of WorkLight as noting the business benefits of social networking sites.
"Collaboration, mind sharing and professional social networking amongst employees, affiliates and partners" are all opportunities that can be "maximised", he remarked.
Mr Lavenda has previously commented on the networking opportunities of Facebook, Bebo and MySpace, after Nielsen research suggested the websites may be useful for employees to access.
