Small firms urged to seek advice on employment law

Small business owners are being urged to seek out specific advice on employment legislation and such issues as parental leave in order to ensure that they are operating within legal boundaries and avoid problems in the future.
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) recommends that small firms get specific, professional advice in this regard due to the fact that employment legislation can be difficult to understand.
Highlighting parental leave rights in particular, an FSB spokesperson stresses the need for businesses to get the proper level of professional advice or risk making costly mistakes in the long run.
"The one thing that we would really say to any business is to make sure that they get professional advice," he explains.
"If you're not doing what the law requires, ignorance is not a defence."
He continues to argue that effectively monitoring shared parental leave is "way beyond" the capabilities of the average small business. Under new government proposals, fathers will be entitled to share half of their partner's maternity leave.
