Small businesses 'should be able to manage health and safety'
24-08-2007
Small firms should be able to manage health and safety risks in the workplace and take positive steps to preventing accidents from taking place, according to the Health and Safety Commission (HSC).
Officials argue that health and safety risks can be managed within a small business environment, stating that while risks cannot be eliminated, preventative measures can be taken beforehand.
It is also advised that employers ensure that there are trained individuals to work with specialist machinery.
That said, HSC spokesperson Ray Allergy asserts that this type of concern is less of an issue in office environments.
"You can manage the risks, but in the broader sense accidents do happen," he commented. "There are a lot of incidents that you can account for."
He added that "with really simple steps", these can be managed.
Workplace fatalities in the UK are on the increase, according to the HSC, with more than 240 workers fatally injured in 2006-07, reports Occupational Hazards.
