Sky has signed up over a million customers to its broadband service, claiming the achievement makes it the UK's fastest-growing broadband provider.
The company revealed in a statement today that it had passed the milestone less than 14 months after connecting its first broadband customer.
Sky said its rate of growth in the competitive broadband market underlined its transformation from a leading company in the TV sector to a "challenger" in the broader £25 billion marketplace for entertainment and communications.
The entertainment giant said that new products such as broadband and telephone services had allowed the company to build on its relationships with its existing customers and attract new consumers.
Sky confirmed that around 30 per cent of the customers who have signed up for its broadband service so far are new subscribers to Sky TV, while some 70 per cent of Sky Broadband customers are taking a paid-for option.
Commenting, Sky's chief executive James Murdoch said: "Sky entered the broadband marketplace because we saw an opportunity to challenge the established players and give customers something better.
"Our aim is to meet the hunger for better quality, better service and better value, so to be the choice of one million customers after just 14 months is a real achievement."
Meanwhile the Post Office has today launched its own pre-pay broadband service, which is specifically being targeted at the over-50s and those who are going online for the first time.
Users of the service will have the option of paying for the service in cash at Post Office branches across the country, with telecommunications giant BT having agreed to provide network support for the new broadband package.
