There is strong competition from engineering companies to recruit the best graduates, it has been said.
According to Elspeth Farrar, communications director at the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, firms are working hard to attract the top engineering graduates as there is a shortage of academics studying the subject.
"There is vast competition among employers to recruit students because there is just fewer of them available," she remarked.
However, this is not the case in every industry, Ms Farrar noted, stating that there can sometimes be a large number of applicants for a small amount of graduate jobs.
Graduate schemes in the media industry are highly competitive and oversubscribed due to the benefits of great deal of exposure and publicity, she said.
The Association of Graduate Recruiters discovered that 43.5 per cent of firms found it difficult to hire the most suitable graduates for jobs last year.
