Single women work 'most unpaid overtime'
The most unpaid overtime is conducted by single women in the workplace, new research has suggested.

Conducted by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the study revealed that 39 per cent of women under the age of 30 work the most extra hours.

While only a quarter (26 per cent) of men of the same age work over their contracted amount for no extra money.

Brendan Barber, the TUC general secretary, warned that many employers can take such dedication for granted.

Mr Barber added that working overtime "can damage people's health, relationships and morale at work".

He also suggested that as women get older and have children they are no longer able to work overtime.

"It is hardly surprising therefore that the senior levels of most organisations are male and that the gender pay gap stubbornly persists," he said.

The TUC recently revealed that media professionals are most likely to put in overtime at work.

ClickAJob chief executive Yngve Traberg puts the responsibility squarely on employers.

"The days of simply looking at a pay packet and expecting a particular amount of work for it are gone," he says.

"Just as customers are becoming more closely involved in significant relationships with the company, so employees need to be too."

Staff relationships, remarks Mr Traberg, are the key to any company's future - and the real answer to overtime issues.

He asks: "Customers are wooed with give and take, so why should staff be expected to go the extra mile without significant reward?"

"Flexitime, job sharing, working from home, there are many ways an employer can show consideration and still be sure of getting the job done," he continues.

"If staff are volunteering the extra hours, it's hardly surprising they feel unloved if their efforts are not appreciated, women with family commitments especially."
