Single parents 'struggle to find flexible working hours'
25-11-2008
Many single parents want to get into employment but are having trouble finding a job that will give them flexible working hours, it has been claimed.
Due to changes in the rules surrounding benefit claims, people will now be asked to actively look for work as part of the conditions of their benefits, One Parent Families|Gingerbread describes.
However, many parents are finding that a lack of jobs with flexible working hours means this is difficult.
Kate Bell, head of policy at One Parent Families|Gingerbread, said that some people "feel they have to make the decision for when they have to be there for their children and how best to combine that with paid work".
According to a Spring 2006 survey from the Office for National Statistics, one in four families in the UK is now headed by a single parent.
