Scottish and Southern Energy sees profits rise by 14 per cent

Scottish and Southern Energy has announced that its adjusted pre-tax profit rose by 13.9 per cent to £1.23 billion in the year ending in March.
Today's announcement is in line with expectations and also declared that the energy company's full-year dividend rose ten per cent to 60.5p a share.
Shares in Scottish and Southern Energy, which provides power to customers in Scotland and the south of England, closed at 1,453p yesterday, thereby valuing the company at £12.6 billion.
"Delivering that dividend growth, delivering our investment programme and delivering excellent service to customers are our key priorities in 2008/09," the company's chairman Robert Smith said in a statement.
Scottish and Southern Energy added an extra 700,000 customers over the last year, the Reuters news agency reports.
The company now has 8.45 million customers in total and is the UK's second-largest supplier of gas and electricity.
