There are set to be around 9,000 jobs created in the supermarket sector in the UK this year, it has been announced.
Two of the largest retail chains in the country will be creating thousands of jobs as they expand their operations.
German company Lidl is reported by the Mirror to be opening 50 new stores across the UK, at which it will be employing 2,000 workers.
Meanwhile, Asda has announced that it will be seeking to employ around 7,000 workers in 2009.
More than half of these jobs will be in nine new food stores, five new Asda Living outlets and in 15 existing stores. The rest will be in its home shopping business, pharmacies and optical centres.
As part of the recruitment drive, the supermarket giant aims to employ up to 3,000 long-term unemployed through Local Employment Partnerships and Remploy.
