British managers rate promotion as second only to divorce when it comes to stressful life events, a new survey has shown.
Rather than a dream come true, promotion is a struggle for many Britons, the research from DDI found, with office politics and the need for personal transformation among the two most common pressure points.
Managing director of DDI Steve Newhall said: "It's a familiar story. You work really hard to get that promotion and you're excited about your new role.
"Then suddenly reality hits home: you are on your own, unsure of what is really expected of you, missing aspects of your previous role that you had finally mastered, without your trusted network of colleagues and politics rife amongst your new peer group whom you struggle to engage with."
However, the scale of the challenges involved in promotion was rarely acknowledged or supported by businesses, the survey found, leaving staff to suffer from "transition anxiety".
