Graduates may find working for a small business is more beneficial to their career progression than employment at a large company, one expert has said.
The chief executive of Graduate Prospects, Mike Hill, remarked that most graduates do not get hired by the recruitment schemes offered by large firms.
Graduates recruitment schemes only account for 15 per cent of the graduate sector, so "the great majority" of university leavers will not be employed by a blue-chip company, Mr Hill said.
"Being a big fish in a small pond is very beneficial - you can have a better work-life balance," he stated.
Mr Hill commented that graduates who join small to medium-sized enterprises could be promoted quickly and may have the chance to learn many different skills.
Graduates' salaries are predicted by the Association of Graduate Recruiters to rise this year by 2.1 per cent.
