ONS staff balloted for strike action

A strike is looming at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) as staff go to the ballot-boxes today to decide upon a course of action over changes.

Unions PCS and Prospect are calling for a strike after fears that 800 jobs are to go at the government statistics agency, with a further 900 positions to be relocated.

Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary said: "Staff are angry at the haphazard illogical approach that management are taking in cutting jobs and relocating posts.

"Staff are being balloted because they want to see a well funded ONS that is fit for purpose and an end to ill thought out job cuts and relocations."

The ONS was established in 1996 after the merger of a range of statistics offices and has its headquarters in London with offices in Titchfield, Hampshire and Newport, Wales.

Following the Lyons Review, the ONS is gearing up to base itself in Newport but Mr Serwotka accused the agency's plans of having "major flaws".

Timings and duration of any proposed strike were not announced
