Older workers in Scotland to get skills boost

15-08-2006

An initiative which provides tailored learning programmes for workers aged 50 and over is to receive funding until 2008.

The Experience Counts programme will continue to be funded by the Scottish Executive and will concentrate on developing the confidence and skills of older learners.

Sector skills councils will work with employers and learning institutions in order to provide short courses tailored to employer and employee needs.

"Experience Counts ensures that older workers can be competitive in the modern workplace," said deputy minister for enterprise and lifelong learning, Allan Wilson.

"By combining older workers' wealth of professional experience with new knowledge and skills development we can further Scotland's commitment to a world-class professional environment."

Four sector skills councils are to receive £224,000 to deliver a range of projects, while a further £56,000 will be made available for further projects in the third phase of the programme.

A compensation law expert told the BBC on Monday that older workers in Scotland were increasingly being made redundant ahead of new laws which will ban age discrimination.
