Supermarket chain Morrisons has withdrawn sliced cold meat products from two of its Scottish stores after an elderly woman died following an E coli outbreak in the area.
Britain's fourth-largest grocer said in a statement it was implementing the recall at two outlets in Paisley as a "precautionary" measure.
Local health officials have indicated that there may be a possible link between sliced cold meats bought at Morrisons' Lonend store and the Falside Road store and the E coli outbreak.
A 66-year-old woman has died as a result of contracting the infection, while her 72-year-old husband is "seriously ill" in hospital, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde confirmed in a statement.
In a further case a 71-year-old woman is also being treated at Paisley's Royal Alexandra hospital, where she is described as "unwell but stable", while three other women and a man are all said to be recovering at home after being affected by the outbreak.
The Public Health Protection Unit (PHPU) is currently investigating the Paisley outbreak, with health bosses revealing that it is working with local environmental health officers, the Food Standards Agency and Health Protection Scotland in a bid to identify the source of the infection.
Dr Syed Ahmed, chair of the local health board's outbreak control team, said: "While there is no conclusive evidence yet, initial investigations have indicated that there may possibly be a link to the consumption of some sliced cold meats bought locally from the delicatessen counters of two Morrisons supermarkets in Paisley the Lonend store and the Falside Road store."
Morrisons said it was "deeply saddened" to learn of the death of an elderly patient following the outbreak of E coli and was "working closely" with the authorities following the scare.
"Although the full facts are not yet known we have, as a precautionary measure, withdrawn sliced cold meat products from sale at the delicatessen counters of two stores in Paisley, Scotland," the supermarket chain confirmed.
"We advise anyone who has bought sliced cold meat products locally from the delicatessen counters in these two stores not to consume them."
