The more skills a job candidate possesses the more they will be able to earn in the long-run, according to the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
New research by the body has discovered that Britons would rather spend money on their appearance than developing new abilities and talents.
Brits will spend around £11 million a year on learning a new skill, but will double their expenditure in the pursuit of perfection by spending £20.6 million on beauty products and toiletries.
Alvin Hall, an independent financial expert, commented that by being skilful, Britons remain employable.
He said: "In our already hectic lives, we frequently overlook the fact that developing new skills and acquiring fresh knowledge helps us to remain valuable.
"Simply put, the more you invest in and improve your knowledge, the more you can earn."
The LSC was set up to improve the competency of the English workforce and is responsible for planning and funding high quality education and training.
