Steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal has consolidated his position at the top of Britain's rich list, according to an analysis of the wealthiest individuals in Britain.
Britain's Rich List, due to be broadcast on ITV1 this evening, is based on the Sunday Times Rich List and reveals that Mr Mittal's personal fortune has grown from £14.9 billion last year to a cool £19 billion this year.
In second place is Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich with an estimated fortune of £10.8 billion. Other prominent businessmen include Virgin boss Richard Branson, who has slipped out of the top ten to 11th place, and Stelios Haji-Ioannou of easyJet fame in 80th.
To get into the richest 1,000 people in Britain a personal fortune of at least £70 million is required. The survey of the UK's wealthiest people found that inherited wealth has slipped in importance over the List's 18-year history – from 75 per cent in 1989 to just 22 per cent of the total today.
Gender continues to play a part as only ten per cent of the list is female, however. Nor does being British count for that much –the Duke of Westminster being the only person hailing from the UK within the top five.
