Minimum wage increase announced

Minimum wage increase announced
A new national minimum wage has been set by the government, which is due to come into force in October.

It is likely that one million workers in the UK will be affected by the 21p increase, as those aged 22 and over will soon be able to command £5.73 per hour from their employers.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) welcomed the move to increase wages, noting that the pay rise was in line with inflation.

FSB employment chairman Alan Tyrell said that the rise "is in the interests of both employers and employees".

The body has previously been concerned about wage rises above inflation, as it stated that small businesses may have been adversely affected.

However, Mr Tyrell remarked that the national minimum wage had been "sensibly set" and was "pleased" that the government has responded to the federation's concerns.

Business secretary John Hutton commented that the wage rise should lift the economy and added that it "makes a real difference" for many workers.
