Many workers dread staff Christmas parties and only go because they feel they have to, one behavioural psychologist has claimed.
According to Jo Hemmings, some employees fear they will get themselves into a difficult situation or say the wrong thing after they have had a drink.
She believes that staff parties create a "false environment" as work and social environments are different.
Instead of being an enjoyable night, the situation can be "deadly dull" or "dangerous" to those who lose control over what they say and how they behave.
"It is putting colleagues into a party atmosphere and being forced to have fun which causes most people grief, being stuck with someone they don't want to be with," Ms Hemmings added.
The British Greyhound Racing Board's research on work Christmas parties found that 36 per cent of people find work Christmas parties boring and 28 per cent feel out of place at such events.
