Many teachers are struggling to educate some of their pupils as an increasing proportion of schoolchildren do not speak English as a first language, new statistics have revealed.
According to the Times, one in ten secondary school children and one in seven primary school pupils speak a foreign tongue as their first language.
These statistics are due to the influx of migrants into the UK in recent years, the publication notes.
Nick Clegg, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, said the government had failed to forecast such language barriers.
"The problems stem from the governments failure to plan for population changes - not from the existence of migrants," he commented.
More investment has been called for by the National Union of Teachers to tackle the communication problem.
Last week, it was announced by the Department for Children, Schools and Families that the number of support staff and teachers has increased over the last 12 months.
