Those who don't know which career path to follow should consider contract or freelance work, limited company specialist Safe Solutions has advised.
The company said that jobseekers could try temporary contract work early on in their career as a way of trying out different market sectors and job roles before settling into a permanent job.
This could help them to avoid making the mistake of choosing the wrong career, it said.
Group CEO of Safe Solutions Ruth Blakemore told onrec.com: "A permanent job featuring for just a few months on your CV can hold you back, and so choosing the wrong job can be a very time-consuming mistake."
Those who knew what they wanted to do as a profession should take a permanent role, she continued, but those who were unsure could think about becoming a self-employed contractor.
"Contracting is ideal for those who are yet to make long term career decisions, and can use this style of working as a way of dipping their toes in the water before diving head first into a career that might not be for them in the long term," she added.
