Jobs pledge aimed at making use of 'untapped potential'

The government has announced plans to find employment opportunities for hundreds of thousands of people in the UK.
Prime minister Gordon Brown and work and pensions secretary Peter Hain unveiled the new 'jobs pledge', which aims to place a quarter of a million people in work.
The initiative is intended to see employers work with the government to provide opportunities for people currently on benefits but able and willing to gain full employment.
"In Britain today there is still too much potential untapped, too much talent wasted, too much ability unrealised," Mr Brown said.
The new initiative aims to see businesses and the government work together to meet its target of helping this number of people find jobs within three years, he added.
In related news, Remploy recently reported that the first three months of 2007 saw a 70 per cent increase in the number of disabled people recruited into mainstream jobs.
