The perception of the IT sector must change to help narrow the skills gap, one expert has said.
According to the chief information officer at the cabinet office, John Suffolk, young people can find the concept of IT unexciting as they may take it for granted, ComputerWeekly reports.
He remarked: "We have got a lot of work to do to take away the geeky IT label.
"To do this, I start by telling people that IT underpins every major economy in the world."
Mr Suffolk recently told conference delegates at a recent government IT meeting in Westminster that the government outsources a lot of IT work to help cope with the shortage of skills.
As well as the 55,000 IT workers in central government, around 55,000 and 85,000 IT professionals in the private sector are collaborated with, he stated.
These comments follow recent claims from Martyn Hart, the chairman of the National Outsourcing Association, who said the IT skills shortage in the UK would boost outsourcing.
Mr Suffolk added that the IT capacity in the UK must be extended.
