The UK's baby boomer generation is increasingly relying on the internet to supplement their pensions.
The various benefits of an online presence are being utilised by the over-50s who have been forced into early retirement, according to a report from Birmingham Midshires' Life 2 campaign.
A large proportion of retired people are becoming self-employed, with the internet perceived as vital to the expansion of a business by two-fifths of those questioned for the research.
Moreover, seven per cent claim that the internet is their sole source of income, while seven per cent of women use it to financially support their business and to develop working relationships.
The study also found that 60 per cent of over-45s have traded on eBay.
Jason Robinson, director of savings operations at Birmingham Midshires, said: "Our research shows that the internet has gone some way to help people overcome the age barrier in employment that many people face as they get older".
