Motor manufacturing firms are being urged to make sure they do not overlook staff still working in the sector.
The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) stated that if businesses have to make people redundant, they must take care to properly support those who remain.
This is because it is likely they will be performing tasks which they have never done before to cover the work of employees who have left.
A spokesperson for the IMI said: "We are trying to ensure that the staff are trained and that they invest in training for the future, so when the market starts to pick up again they have a good strong workforce that is skilled and can do the jobs competently."
Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders recently revealed that car production has been falling, as it was down by 58.7 per cent in January 2009.
