HR staff use social networking to spy, research reveals
05-02-2009
A new survey has revealed that a third of human resources professionals use social networking sites to find out information about their workers.
The research, conducted by yasni.co.uk, also discovered that of those who snoop on their staff, 24 per cent are not impressed by what they find.
A further 32 per cent of employers said they used social networking sites as a way of finding out more about people applying for vacancies.
Of those who took such actions, a fifth admitted that they had been put off potential candidates by seeing drunken photographs and rude comments.
Lisette Howlet, founder of HireScores.com, said: "What is fundamental here is dealing with findings intelligently.
"Recruiters should appreciate a social networking site is just that - social and therefore language and attitudes are inevitably more relaxed."
Meanwhile, research from the Work Foundation and BT Global Services UK has revealed that 45 per cent of office-based employees use social networking on a daily basis.
