The last bottle of British HP sauce was bottled in Birmingham today after 103 years of production at the site.
Owner Heinz's decision to move production to Elst in the Netherlands has caused 125 jobs cuts. However the baked beans manufacturer, which purchased the parent company HP Foods from French company Danone in June 2005, asserts that the plant in the Aston area of the city is no longer viable.
Seen as one of the most British brands, HP, which stands for the houses of parliament, will continue to feature an illustration of Britain's political centre despite moving all production overseas.
Workers held protests outside the American embassy in London while a local Save our Sauce campaign was run. Labour MP Khalid Mahmood also showed his opposition to the move by brandishing a bottle of HP Sauce in the House of Commons during prime minister's questions.
Speaking at the announcement of the factory closure last year John Jordan from the Trade and General Workers Union said: "The workers at HP sauce in Birmingham are very bitter at this decision by Heinz."
