Holidaymakers urged to stay in Britain during downturn
Holidaymakers looking to save money this summer have been urged to stay in Britain and provide a boost to local business during the economic downturn.

The Local Government Association (LGA) said councils across the country are joining up with tourist firms and visitor attractions to promote special deals and savings on holidays and days out during the credit crunch.

Recent figures suggest nearly five million people who went abroad for their summer break last year are now considering staying in the UK in 2009.

The LGA also claims local authorities are key to ensuring the quality of British holidays with attractions such as caravan parks, campsites and guesthouses being kept in acceptable conditions.

Councillor Chris White, chair of the LGA's culture, tourism and sport board, said: "Everyone can benefit from a little time away, and the great news this year is that a holiday in Britain is a real win-win situation.

"Councils are helping people get access to the best deals, while ensuring the money they can afford to spend goes into the pockets of local firms.

"Lots of families have to be careful with their finances at the moment, but that shouldn't mean that they have to miss out on a trip away this summer. Councils are working hard to help the money people can spare go further and there are lots of ideas out there."

Councillor Chris White suggested Britain had a "massive range of holiday locations", from which nearly everyone could find something to suit them.

"Beach lovers should consider the Cornish coast, it's time to swap Swiss mountain views for the beauty of the Lake District and the hotels and shops of Manchester can rival Milan," he added.
