Japanese computer game manufacturer Nintendo saw its net sales grow by 90 per cent in the year ending March 31st.
Its hugely popular Nintendo DS, which has reversed the long-term decline in the handheld gaming market, sold over 23 million units in the financial year. Accompanying DS games including Nintendogs, New Super Mario Bros and Brain Age all sold over six million units.
Meanwhile the Wii console, which allows users to engage intuitively with a unique remote controller, has performed extremely well in the first five months after its launch with 5.84 million units sold.
As a result overall operating income from Nintendo's products rose by 160 per cent in the year ending March 31st compared to the previous year.
Nintendo said in an accompanying statement that it attributed its sales success to broadening the appeal of its main products, especially to female and senior demographics.
Looking to the future, the company added that it wants to turn the Nintendo DS into a "must-have-for-every-family" product into, more simply, a "must-have-for-everyone".
