Half of the graduates that left university with a physiotherapy degree in 2007 are still without work in the profession, new figures have revealed today.
Out of the 50 per cent of graduates who have found work as a physiotherapists, half of are on short-term contracts, research from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) has revealed.
In total, 1,800 physiotherapy graduates since 2005 have not found work in the profession.
Phil Gray, chief executive of the CSP, has called on the government for help.
"With a government investment of £50 million they can put highly-trained physiotherapy graduates into useful jobs and provide services that transform patients lives," he said.
Furthermore, commissioners should be looking at which areas of the country need physiotherapists the most, he concluded.
Yesterday, the CSP issued advice on how to play on a Nintendo Wii without injuring oneself.
