Almost half of IT professionals in the UK are considering changing their job, new research has revealed.
This was twice as many as were considering the move last year, a survey from Skillsmarket and the Association of Technology Staffing Companies (Atsco) found.
One reason for the change could be that pay for IT workers is climbing by 18 per cent every year as employers vie with each other to attract IT staff from a limited number of available candidates, compared to a national increase in pay of 3.7 per cent the survey revealed,.
Chief executive of Atsco Ann Swain said: "Many IT professionals actually wanted to switch jobs during the dot com boom, and are now looking for their next role. Despite the availability of candidates, the industry is unable to meet demand."
This is pushing up pay in the sector, with the average pay for IT professionals estimated at £34,000.
Companies will need to put into place measures to retain the skills that they already have, Ms Swain advised, referring to the fluidity of the IT jobs market as "a double-edged sword".
