Government introduces long-term sick leave measures
02-12-2008
New measures have been introduced by the government in an attempt to help people stay in work rather than take long-term sick leave.
It is also hoped that the initiative will aid disabled people or those who suffer from chronic conditions to receive proper care so they can manage their condition and therefore remain in employment, thisisderbyshire.co.uk reports.
The move may also have a significant impact on businesses as the government estimates that sick leaves costs around £100 billion a year, as well as draining a company's resources.
Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber's chief executive George Cowcher said: "There's a view in some quarters that not being able to work is somehow an easy option when in reality it leaves people vulnerable to slipping into poverty and social exclusion."
Research by System Concepts has found that many employees take time off work due to stress-related illnesses as many managers fail to spot initial signs of the problem occurring.
