Retail staff have been named by an expert as one of the sectors most likely to make a claim through the employment tribunal.
According to Ed Sweeney from the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas), workers in the retail, hospitality and construction sectors are most likely to consider going to the employment tribunal with a claim, as these industries often do not have good human resources practice, Personnel Today reports.
"Many employers [in these sectors] know little about what is good practice, especially the small to medium-sized businesses in hospitality and hairdressing, employing fewer than ten people," he remarked to the publication.
Mr Sweeney, the chairman of Acas, noted that low levels of union representation and high staff turnover are other factors in these industries that lead to more employment disputes than in any other.
Acas aims to improve organisations and working life through better employment relations and, according to its latest research, the body averted 16,000 employment tribunals last year.
